The Art of Becoming
“This above all: To thine own self be true.”
— William Shakespeare, Hamlet
To inhabit a world imagined or occupied by another is, in many ways, an exploration of the self.
As singers, we become both mouthpiece and translator, giving voice to the emotional landscapes and inner lives of the characters we inhabit. Whether through opera or art song, we seek to illuminate the stories, poetry, and experiences that first inspired the composer.
There is something endlessly compelling about this pursuit: the attempt to evoke the full complexity of human feeling through music. Love, longing, grief, joy, desire, and despair are never quite as simple as the words we use to describe them. And perhaps that is why the work of an artist is never truly finished. There is always another layer to uncover, another color to discover, another truth to express.
For me, the art of singing is as much about becoming as it is about being. Each role, each song, and each performance offers another opportunity to explore the relationship between the imagined world and my own humanity.
Here, I share the performances, collaborations, and artistic pursuits that mark my continuing exploration of the human experience, with my voice as both instrument and medium.
